6 Best Spices to Help You Live Longer
Written by Karen Salmansohn
Want to live to 100 – and feel 30? Me too!
I'm a late in life mom – and want to be around to dance at my son’s wedding! With this in mind, I recently promised my son, Ari, that I’d do everything I can to live to 100.
Ari wanted me to live to 200 - but I bargained him down to 100.
Ari accepted my counter-offer.
As a happiness and wellness expert, I’ve always been interested in living a healthy lifestyle. But after my vow to be a centenarian, I became particularly passionate about learning and practicing as many healthy habits as I could memorize and muster.
I went on a 2 year quest to interview the top aging experts - and found out some fascinating research about how to live longer, healthier, younger.
For example… You can add more seasons to your life, if you add specific seasonings to your meals and smoothies.
I recommend you get busy stirring in some of these…
Oregano
Oregano/oregano oil has 4 times the antioxidant power as blueberries on a per ounce basis! And 1 tiny tablespoon of fresh oregano gives you the same antioxidant boost as a medium-sized apple. Plus the beta-caryophyllin in oregano oil also helps to reduce inflammation.
Turmeric
Turmeric extract lowers your risk of heart attack by a 56% - says a study in American Journal of Cardiology. Plus turmeric improves your cardiovascular health as much as aerobic exercise - says a 2012 study in the Nutrition Research journal! Crazy but true - thanks to it having a “primary polyphenol” called “curcumin.” Plus turmeric/curcumin is reported to protect the brain, prevent inflammation and help with cancer.
Wild Zora's Mediterranean Lamb meat and veggie bars are packed with turmeric and oregano, and are compliant with the Autoimmune Protocol Diet so they are safe for your gut.
Cloves
Cloves are not a famously used spice in the kitchen - but in research labs they’re revered for having the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) Score of all spices. Meaning? They’re the highest in antioxidants. Cloves are also famed for eliminating intestinal parasites, fungi, and bacteria.
Ginger
Ginger contains geraniol - a recommended potent cancer fighter. Plus, ginger is an anti-inflammatory - known for being helpful for your heart and beneficial at preventing blood clots. It’s recommended for boosting the immune system and touted as protecting against atherosclerosis.
Ginseng
Ginseng is reported to be a potent heart protector. It’s recommended to boost blood flow - thereby delivering blood to the heart when/if oxygen might be low. Plus its improved blood flow also is helpful for reducing the stickiness of blood platelets and the risk of blood clots.
Hot Sauce
Yep - this unusual chilli-pepper-touting longevity advice is backed up by experiments with mice.
University of California researcher Andrew Dillin explains it like this: “When you block your body’s ability to feel pain you boost your lifespan. One way to switch off pain is to regularly eat chilli peppers. We tested this theory on mice – by stopping their pain signals from reaching their brains. Not only were the lives of these mice 14% longer, but they were also healthier.”
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, an osteopathic physician, the health perks of hot peppers are not only due to the pain blocking benefits of hot spicy peppers, but also their “capsaicin” - which causes your body to heat up and burn energy.
Dr. Mercola explains, “Capsaicin activates cell receptors in your intestinal lining – which has a domino affect - creating a reaction that lowers the risk of tumors, shrinks fat tissue, lowers blood fat levels, and fights fat buildup by triggering beneficial protein changes in your body.”
All this good longevity news makes chilli peppers extra hot stuff!
Wild Zora's Chili Beef meat and veggie bars are made with cayenne pepper and are a great savory snack-bar option with a little kick of heat and the incredible benefits of capsaicin.
